1.034: i've been working on the (redacted)
As the end of the year draws near, I realize I've not offered any explanation for my recent rather lengthy spells of silence here on my blog.
The thing is, I've been busy, working on several rather exciting projects that quite honestly have been consuming nearly all my waking hours. Some really neat, game-changing stuff – even more interesting perhaps than the stuff I was working on last year at this time!
Not only have these projects kept me away from the keyboard, but I've been living in abject fear that I'd somehow slip up here on my blog and reveal some corporate secret or another in what surely would have been a very poorly timed CLM.
But you know me – anarchy means there are no rules. So I sucked it up and went ahead and wrote a post anyway.
But with my last sliver of common sense, I paused just before hitting the "Publish" button, and sent my draft out for a peer review.
Follows is what came back from my wizened peers and advisors…(and thanks to all of you for saving my butt!)
redefining storage
One of the biggest that all
face is
– an
that occurs
, especially in
. With
growing at an
CAGR of over 60%, a
that involved
in 2001 today
over
.
Well that is about to become a
of the
, because one of the
I've been
on
what has been the
of
– the
of
and
.
That's right – no longer will have to
or
...and even
will become a
, once EMC
! The
will
be
again…
Isn't that exciting?
architecture
Another exciting that I've been
in my role as a
of the Symmetrix Management Team is our
-
Symmetrix
. Built on a
new

, this
breaks virtually all the
of enterprise-class
. Customers will be able to
to more than
of usable

I/O

IOPS with

Although many have the

to date
has been able to

that

The wait is (almost) over.
enabling the
future
Speaking of and
,
have
the
that today's
are technically
and
meet the needs
we are
for
. With the
of
power and
infrastructure
to
further and further
users, something is going to have to change, or we're
the world of
literally
around
.
This is a that many of us here at EMC are working on – both to quantify the
, and to define viable technology solutions to
. One of these is a
that we're calling
– the
to
information stored
instantaneously
or
. All this with
and
, assuring
even
a
.
The of this
are
and we're
define
that will apply not only to
like
and
, but to
and
as well. This one is truly going to
.
But you'll have to to find out what it is…
well, you get the idea
Based on the feedback from my peer review, it seems pretty clear I'm not going to be able to discuss these topics in any meaningful manner, nor any of the half-dozen or so other strategic investments that EMC is making in the little corner of the storage platform arena that is occupied by Symmetrix.
Sorry…I wish I could share, but I just can't (see, I like my job – a lot!). Maybe if you sign one of those super-secret NDAs I could talk about some of this…but then again, maybe not.
Just wouldn't be prudent. Not at this juncture!
Rest assured, however, that investments are being made to address critical issues facing the storage industry today (and tomorrow), from controlling the costs of rampant information growth and shrinking IT staffs in these tough economic times, to simplifying the management of large-scale and data center infrastructures, to reducing the $/GB costs and expanding the use cases for Enterprise Flash Drives, to delivering purpose-optimized new solutions for multi-tiered storage environments are designed to be lean, green and yes - mean.
And that's just what's up in Symmetrix-land.
So, until the time comes that I can disclose and elaborate on these projects without risking my employee access card, I'll leave you with this timely prose:
'Twas the Night!
By L. Daniel Quinn'Twas the night before Thursday
And poor Clement Moore
Had his poem being copied
By many a bore. His "Night Before Christmas"
Is perfect in rhyme
His rhythm and cadence
Are wonderfully fine. But then come the wise guys
With Internet cool
Who use Clement's rhyme
As sort of a tool. They pick up the style
From this poem of "that night"
And they hitch up their sled
to whatever's their gripe. Now I'm not even saying
That there's something not right
By using Moore's poem
To carry a fight.I guess my complaint
Is not in their chore
But the number of times
they steal from Clem Moore. So I say to you all
As I close down this gripe"Happy Christmas to All,
and to
All a Good Night!"
P.S. See more Clement Moore parody's here.
technorati tags: redacted,EMC,REDACTED,Redacted,Symmetrix,DMX,storage redacted,Flash Drives,Enterprise Flash Drives,Storage Management,data redacted,tiered storage,redacted redacted,Clement Moore,'twas the (redacted) before (redacted)(Here's also to a Happy and Prosperous New Year!)
I can have you killed.
Don't think for a second I don't have an operative who'll put two into the back of your head if I send them a text message with the word "Redrum" in it.
STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER BARRY!
Merry Christmas. ;-)

Barry I broke out an old Mac, hacked a new version of Linux on it with an iPhone front-end, using an older key and some pieced together software, here's what I was able to <> of your redaction, hopefuly no NDAs were harmed, accidentaly or intentially, spoofed, poked or jabbed during this process and rest assured, no Macs were harmed either:
Redefining storage <>
One of the biggest <> that all <> face is <>– an <> that occurs <>, especially in <>. With <> growing at an <> CAGR of over 60%, a <> that involved <<21 different vendors> in 2001 today <> over <<21 different technologies>>.

I was only to get through the 1st part, Im going to need more Macs and iPhones to sort through the rest, that is unless I to get redacted.

Barry,
Here's the correct "un-redacted" text from previous post.
Redefining storage "news"
One of the biggest "barriers" that all "storage vendors" face is "IT budgets"– an "phenomena" that occurs "time to time", especially in "open source environments". With "global warming" growing at an "estimated" CAGR of over 60%, a "informed customer" that involved "21 different vendors" in 2001 today "would have" over "21 different technologies".
Well that "phenomena" is about to become a "thing" of the "future", because one of the "innovations" I've been "reading" on "twitter" what has been the "use some times" of "small urls"– the "resulting" of "lost" and "found data".
That's right – no longer will "government" have to "backup" or "archive"...and even "consumers" will become a "shopping force once again", once EMC "buys the USA"! The "current recession" will "maybe" be "gone, buy storage" again…
Isn't that exciting?
Cheers

Greg -
That's amazingly close, but you're safe - 'Zilla isn't going to have to have you redrum-ed ;*)
Perhaps those Apple products aren't quite in tune with the challenges of enterprise IT.

Thanks, and I will sleep better tonight knowing that I wont be redrum-ed by 'Zilla. Im working with outdated 1.0 analyst decoder ring software I found on some old retired mainframe somewhere, hence not able to get any closer, however it is what it is. - GS

I was just reading wikileaks and saw what they did to http://wikileaks.org/leak/uncensored-competition-commission-report-on-banking.pdf:
"Using technical methods, Wikileaks has decrypted and removed the redactions from all of the report apart from a few images. The previously redacted regions, are shown in blue highlight."
I wonder what can be found in the EMC pdfs? I nice little project for Christmas?
BTW: The copyright has expired on Moore's work so it is not classed as stealing. The Symm has been around for so long I assume the same holds true?
Posted by: Ronald | December 24, 2008 at 06:20 AM
Not THAT'S interesting, Ronald. But somehow I don't think it'll work for my post, since the relevant publications haven't been released yet ;^)
And no, the Symm hasn't been around enough for its copyrights to expire. Most of its patents remain in force as well. Plus, Symmetrix doesn't rhyme with anything B*}

I am fearless in the face of EMC NDAs and I post the first paragraph here!!
Redefining Storage Bottles
One of the biggest challenges that all house holders face is unused crap - an irritant that occurs in all homes, especially in this Xmas period. With plastic tat growing at an disturbing CAGR of over 60%, a spring clean that involved several cardboard boxes in 2001 today takes well over a thousand boxes.
Well that problem is about to become a problem of the past, because one the ideas I've been working on lately, what has been the reason for existence of my being - the meaning of life and death.
That's right - no longer will housewives have to clean or tidy...and even dusting will become a thing of the past, once EMC have discovered genies! The obedient ones will be amongst us again!
Isn't that exciting
Posted by: Martin G | December 29, 2008 at 09:51 AM
Martin - you are getting a mite too close to the facts, both here and on your latest "future predictions" blog post.
You'd better go back and reread the terms of your NDA's and start following them. Else I'll have you bottled and sent to some unfortunate DS8000 owner to become their storage Genie!
Have a Happy!!!

TEASE!
Seriously though, they need to release some info soon, so I can hold off my next project....I'd hate to see EMC lose us(well, to be honest, I just don't want another DS---I'd settle for hitachi or EMC...just not another DS, please god)

Never mind zilla and his operatives, its already too late anyway…..
I heard the from a good source that the Hitachi guys already gave their Operatives the code word “Cromartie” and have successfully carried out operation “John Henry”.
Rather than a couple of bullets to the head, they took you from your office and bundled you into a van waiting outside equipped with a USP-VM. They hooked you up to the USP-VM, mapped the contents of your brain through UVM and then Shadow Imaged its contents to a thin provisioned 5GB LDEV (low utilisation apparently). So they’ve got the contents already. In and out just like that.
Its cut throat out there in the storage business. If you make any similar claims to inside knowledge in the future you might want to up your security detail first and may be employ some doubles to keep the competition guessing.
